Continuing the Global Investing Journey: Opening a Gotrade Account as a Philippine Investor (2026 Experience)

Hello beshies! 🌟 Welcome back to my personal finance diary, eme! Building on the momentum of switching my Sun Life mutual funds from Philippine equities to a world equity fund, I recently took a more direct step into global markets. I officially opened a Gotrade account and purchased my first fractional shares of QQQM (Invesco NASDAQ 100 ETF).

If you are navigating the hurdles of adulting and trying to optimize your financial portfolio, here is my honest experience, real timeline, and breakdown of setting up a US brokerage account directly from the Philippines.

Why Gotrade and QQQM?

I was looking for an investment with high growth potential, while fully understanding that higher potential returns come with significant risks. Since I already maintain steady exposure to local Philippine investments through Pag-IBIG MP2, COL Financial stocks, and Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs), I felt ready to commit to a truly aggressive global allocation.

Why invest in QQQM specifically? Because I already have broad local and international exposure, I wanted a dedicated, US-centric asset in my portfolio. QQQM tracks the Nasdaq-100 Index, giving me exposure to large non-financial companies listed on Nasdaq, including major tech names such as Apple, Microsoft, Nvidia, and Alphabet (Google's parent company).

I also wanted to explore direct ETF investing to help keep ongoing fund expenses lower and maximize my investments' long-term growth potential. For comparison, Sun Life's World Equity Index Feeder Fund lists a 1.00% management and distribution fee plus a 0.15% transfer agency fee, while QQQM has a 0.15% expense ratio. Just a note that their holdings and fee structures differ. My Sun Life fund provides global equity exposure, while QQQM focuses on the Nasdaq-100. Lower fees don't guarantee higher returns, and investing through Gotrade may involve additional costs, such as currency conversion and withdrawal fees.

I chose to invest in QQQM with a 5- to 10-year holding horizon. For now, I plan to add money periodically — most likely quarterly, depending on my budget and funding costs. This lets me continue investing without making frequent small transfers that could eat into my contributions. My actual schedule may change, and I'll reinvest or retain any earnings according to my long-term plan.

As a bonus, I've never maintained a separate US dollar bank account, so being able to fund my investments in USD and hold any uninvested cash within Gotrade is convenient for me. However, keeping funds in a foreign currency means being exposed to exchange rate fluctuations. Of course, currency movements can work both ways, and the US dollar isn't always guaranteed to strengthen against the Philippine peso.

If you want to start your own global investing journey too, you can sign up using my Gotrade Referral Link Here or use my invite code OVB2C5 during registration. Check the current promotion's eligibility requirements and terms before funding your account, as rewards and conditions may change. And of course, a major adulting reminder: please do your own research (DYOR) and execute due diligence first. Just like any other aggressive financial vehicle, global investing comes with real market risks so make sure to invest only what you are willing to risk, okay? Panindigan natin ang growth path responsibly, mga 'te!

Assessing the Regulatory Risks: How Risky Is It to Use Gotrade?

Before investing through an overseas brokerage, it's worth understanding which legal entity operates the platform and what regulatory protections apply. Gotrade's Help Center states that Gotrade Securities Inc. is licensed by the Labuan Financial Services Authority in Malaysia. However, foreign licensing and registration with Philippine regulators are separate matters. I wasn't able to verify a Philippine SEC registration or license for the Gotrade entity serving my account from the sources I checked. This means investors might face similar regulatory uncertainties to those previously experienced by users of platforms like eToro and Interactive Brokers (IBKR) in the local market. If local regulatory bodies restrict access in the future, managing these assets could become complicated.

Despite this, for me it remains one of the smoothest and most accessible options for retail investors in the Philippines. After researching global brokerages for months, I decided that the operational ease was worth my calculated risk — the risk that I'm willing to take.

The Realistic Timeline: Onboarding and My Actual App History

To give you an idea of how fast the Gotrade setup is, here's the exact timeline of my onboarding and first QQQM purchase in September 2026, based on my email notifications and in-app transaction history:

  • September 5: I initiated my registration and went through the basic onboarding path. I had to use both my UMID and passport here.

  • September 7: The registration phase moved quickly. I completed my authenticator security setup, initiated my deposit request, and had my funds successfully cleared. My net cash-in of $1,013.92 officially arrived in my account.

  • September 10: My buy order was executed successfully, and I officially became a QQQM holder!

  • September 11: My official digital prospectus documents became available online for review.

  • September 25 & 26: The best part? I already received my very first QQQM dividend of $1.12! Very small bonus lang ‘to kasi growth naman ang habol ko. The dividend appeared in my transaction history on September 25, while the email notification arrived on September 26.

The Gotrade Welcome Bonus Bug & Customer Support Experience

A screenshot of the automated email welcoming me to the platform with a whopping $0 reward bonus. Classic system glitch! 😂

No platform onboarding is entirely without friction, at hindi pwedeng walang kaunting drama sa buhay ko, eme. I specifically timed my initial deposit to take advantage of a promotional welcome reward, hoping the bonus would offset my local bank transfer fees. However, on September 7, right when my account was approved, I received an automated system email stating:

"Your account has been approved... As promised, your account has been funded with the $0 reward..."

Taray ng $0 reward? This triggered some immediate concern regarding whether the promotion had expired or I did something wrong.

Since I had deposited over $1,000 to qualify for the promotion, I reached out to Gotrade support via email and in-app chat.

The customer support experience was smooth and impressive. They responded quickly, reviewed the issue, and manually adjusted the $30 promotional credit. Their responsiveness definitely earned high marks from me, hihi.

The Real Costs: Exchange Rates and Fees

Moving capital from PHP to USD involves operational friction that impacts your baseline returns:

  • Foreign Exchange Spreads and Other Fees: When I initiated the transfer, the mid-market exchange rate shown on Google was hovering around ~₱62.50+, but the effective conversion rate applied to my deposit via UnionBank was closer to ~₱64.00+.
  • Total Principal Capital: I used ₱65,000 from the funds released after reactivating my dormant BPI Save Up account to fund my Gotrade account. After conversion and applicable charges, $1,013.92 was credited to my Gotrade account.
Securing the welcome bonus helped mitigate the initial premium paid on the currency exchange and other fees.

Portfolio Status and Performance Tracking

To keep my tracking consistent, I record my portfolio value in USD. This helps me monitor changes within the account without daily PHP/USD exchange-rate movements affecting the figures, although my overall returns in pesos will still depend on currency conversion when I eventually withdraw. Here is the financial snapshot as of today, October 15, 2026:

The Perks of Holding USD & The Reality of Taxes

One thing I appreciate about Gotrade is being able to hold USD within the app and earn a little interest on eligible uninvested cash through its Grow feature. I’ve already earned a small amount from my idle balance (since I wasn't able to buy QQQM the same day that I funded my Gotrade account), which is a nice little bonus while waiting to invest. Just remember that brokerage cash isn't the same as money held in a traditional bank savings account, and Grow's terms, eligibility, and rates may change.

I also noticed a $0.28 deduction for US withholding tax on my $1.12 QQQM dividend. Proof that investing abroad comes with tax considerations too, eme! 😂

Final Thoughts

Transitioning from traditional mutual funds to investing directly in a US-listed ETF was initially intimidating, especially when navigating currency conversion costs and account verification requirements. However, having more direct control over my asset allocation and being able to track my QQQM investment firsthand has made the learning curve worthwhile.
