How to Switch Mutual Funds via the Sun Life Mobile App: My 2026 Experience

If you started your investing journey during the pandemic era around March 2020 like I did, you probably thought, "PH equities are down! This is the absolute perfect time to buy!"

Fast forward to August 2026. "Anyare na ‘te buy the dip pa din?"

Let’s look at the actual performance data, because numbers don't lie, but they sure can make you cry, eme. Over more than six long years, my fund only managed a measly 20% total gain! When you compute the annual growth, that's like just a 2.88% compounded annual growth rate. Imagine if I had just parked that money in Pag-IBIG MP2 — my earnings would have easily doubled that percentage, and I wouldn't be staring at a flatlining portfolio.

Because the local market has been moving like a tired turtle, I finally hit my limit. I decided to pull the trigger and switch my funds to something more aggressive: a World Equity fund, with at least another 5-year holding horizon. No plans to top up for now; let's just see how global capitalism handles my portfolio's growth.

If you are planning to move your money around, here is a quick overview of how to switch mutual funds via the Sun Life mobile app based on my actual experience, followed by the processing timeline to expect and a few hacks I discovered along the way.

Quick Summary Guide: How to Switch Funds

If you just want the fast, no-nonsense workflow, here is exactly what you need to do inside the app:

  • Step 1 (Optional): Check Your Risk Profile. Log in to the Sun Life PH Mobile App. If your target fund is aggressive (like World Equity), ensure your Investor Profile is updated to "Aggressive" so the fund shows up in your primary recommendations.

  • Step 2: Start the Transaction. Go to your investment dashboard, tap your current mutual fund (the one you want to leave), and select the "Switch Funds" option.

  • Step 3: Specify Your Transfer Details and Target Fund. Choose your destination fund (like the World Equity Index Feeder Fund). Under the request details, input your transfer preference by choosing between "Estimated fund value" (Amount) or "No. of shares" depending on your investment goal.

  • Step 4: Request the OTP & Submit. Double-check the summary page, request your mobile One-time PIN (OTP), type it in, and submit. Check your email immediately for your official Transaction Confirmation log!

My Deep-Dive Experience: What Actually Happened Inside the App

1. Navigating the Sun Life Risk Assessment Update

Let's talk about Step 1. Before Sun Life lets you change your asset allocation, the system will prompt you to complete your Sun Life risk assessment update via the Investor Profile Questionnaire. As you can see in my screenshots, they will ask you questions about your liquidity, investment objectives (like Capital Appreciation), investment horizon, knowledge, experience, and risk tolerance.

When I first took it honestly, my results didn’t qualify as "Aggressive." Because of this, the World Equity Index Feeder Fund didn't even bother to show up on my primary list of recommended funds!

  • What I did: I retook the questionnaire and tweaked my answers to reflect a much higher risk tolerance until the app flashed, "You are now an Aggressive Investor!"

  • The Alternative Hack: If you don't want to adjust your profile answers, you don't actually have to change your risk tolerance like I did. You can simply look for a "See More" or "View All Funds" option at the bottom of the selection page to manually look up global funds.

2. Choosing "No. of Shares" vs "Amount" (For a Full Switch)

Once you find the fund you’re switching in, the screen will ask how you want to transfer your assets. Under the Request details page, you can choose between entering a specific Estimated fund value or specifying the No. of shares.

If your goal is to do a complete, clean transfer of your entire investment, look for the "Transfer all shares" checkbox and tap it!

  • Why it matters: Mutual fund prices (NAVPU) fluctuate every single day. If you manually type a fixed peso amount, the market price will have shifted by the time Sun Life actually settles your request on the backend. This leaves a messy, tiny balance of fractional shares behind sitting alone in your old Philippine Equity Fund. Ticking the "Transfer all shares" box ensures your old account is completely wiped clean and successfully moved.

3. Desktop Website Issues? Try the Mobile App Instead

I initially tried doing this transaction on the desktop website, but it was a test of patience. While the initial login OTP arrived perfectly, the final transaction submission OTP refused to send. I tried it repeatedly on a Sunday until I gave up.

If you encounter the Sun Life website OTP problem, I highly suggest switching over to the Sun Life PH Mobile App instead. In my experience, when the web platform encountered glitches, transitioning to the mobile app worked better and allowed me to retry easily and complete the request faster.

Sun Life Mutual Fund Switch Processing Time: My Real Timeline

If you submit your switch and notice nothing changes the next day, don't panic! Your money didn't vanish into thin air. Sun Life processes fund switches in two distinct backend phases: Fund Switch-out (selling your old fund) and Fund Switch-in (buying your new fund). You can also easily track the ongoing status of your transaction in your app under the "Requests" tab.

Here was my exact timeline based on my official Sun Life email logs:

  • Aug 23 (Sunday): Attempted via desktop website. Total failure. The final confirmation OTP ghosted me.

  • Aug 24–25 (Monday–Tuesday): System maintenance days. Pahirapan mag-login kahit sa mobile app.

  • Aug 26 (Wednesday): SUCCESS! Submitted via the mobile app. I received my Transaction Confirmation email immediately, and Sun Life officially executed the Fund Switch-out (selling my PH Equity shares) on this day.

  • Sep 1 (Tuesday): Received the email Acknowledgment of Switch-in. This means they held the cash from my sold shares and prepared to purchase the new asset.

  • Sep 3 (Thursday): The official Fund Switch-in went through! My new World Equity shares were officially bought at that day's price.

  • Sep 4 (Friday): Everything fully reflected on my app dashboard.

Is a 7-Day Waiting Period Normal for Sun Life Fund Switching?

Counting from my successful mobile submission on August 26 to the final reflection on September 4, the total Sun Life mutual fund switch processing time took around 7 business days. This excludes the weekends and the August 31 National Heroes Day holiday. So I guess, a 1-to-2 week waiting period is completely standard!

Final Thoughts

Switching funds within the Sun Life ecosystem is completely free, and doing it via the app makes it highly convenient — provided you have the patience for their occasional system maintenance windows.

Quick Tip: While the switching process itself doesn’t have a fee, just make sure your old fund has already passed its minimum holding period (usually around 90 days, depending on the fund) before you move it. Since I’ve held my PH Equity fund since 2020, I was completely safe from any extra charges. But if your money is relatively new, double-check your fund's rules first so you don't get hit with an unexpected Early Redemption Fee (exit fee) upon switching out!
